Are you looking to kick-start your career for an environmental consultancy? Do you enjoy hands-on fieldwork and want to build real practical experience in the water quality of our rivers, reservoirs and estuaries? Are you based in the South of England and keen to work outdoors in all seasons?
We’re looking for three Water Quality Surveyors to join our survey team, in the new year. The role is offered on a 6-month fixed-term contract initially, with the potential for further opportunities. This is an ideal role for someone early in their career, whether you’re a recent graduate or have some practical environmental experience and want to develop your field skills with a leading environmental consultancy.
Working across ponds, rivers, reservoirs and estuaries, you’ll play a key part in collecting high-quality environmental data that supports our water and sediment quality programmes. The role is fieldwork-focused, and you’ll need to be happy working outdoors in all weather conditions and travelling regularly across the South of England (the majority of our work is in Sussex and Kent but could as far west as Bristol/Exeter). You’ll be supported by experienced colleagues and will also have opportunities to contribute to desk-based tasks such as data processing, analysis and reporting.
You’ll work closely with senior members of the team, helping support ongoing projects and tenders, and gaining exposure to the full lifecycle of environmental monitoring programmes. It’s a great opportunity to build confidence, grow your technical capability, and get meaningful, practical experience that can shape your next steps.
To be successful in this role, you'll need:
-
Some experience or strong interest in environmental fieldwork (e.g., from a degree, volunteer work, placement, or previous job)
-
Good communication skills, both written and verbal
-
A careful, methodical approach to data collection, collation and reporting
-
The ability to work well as part of a project team
-
A flexible, proactive attitude and willingness to travel
-
A full driving licence, access to a car and living within the South of England (Bristol → Exeter → Kent)
It’s a bonus if you have:
At APEM, we’re committed to supporting early-career professionals. You’ll be joining a collaborative and friendly team, gaining valuable experience across survey work, data analysis and project delivery—and building the foundation for future opportunities across our Water Quality division.
If you want practical field experience with a respected environmental consultancy, we’d love to hear from you.
