About The Role

Are you an environmental professional with a strong technical foundation in the water environment and a passion for delivering high-quality assessments? Do you enjoy working collaboratively across disciplines and are ready to take your next step into deeper technical coordination, client-facing work and project delivery?

Due to sustained growth, APEM’s Water Management Division is seeking a Senior Consultant – Water Assessments to join our Environmental Appraisal team. This is a varied and rewarding role that blends technical authoring, discipline coordination and project management.

You will work across water quality, hydrology, hydromorphology, flood risk, groundwater and aquatic ecology inputs, contributing to integrated assessments that shape high-impact environmental and infrastructure projects at both national and local scale.

This role offers a clear pathway towards Principal level, with growing exposure to multidisciplinary integration, client leadership and strategic environmental advisory work.

What you’ll be doing

  • Authoring and contributing to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapters

  • Producing Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments

  • Supporting Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)

  • Coordinating baseline data and technical inputs from multiple environmental disciplines

  • Managing project delivery, including scheduling, data interpretation and quality assurance

  • Leading small to medium-sized workstreams, including commercial tracking, risk management and client-facing responsibilities

As your confidence grows, you’ll take increasing ownership of project elements, strengthen your commercial awareness and build the leadership capability required for progression.

What we’re looking for

You’ll need to bring:

  • MSc or PhD in Environmental Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

  • Minimum three years’ experience in environmental consultancy

  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation, particularly the Water Framework Directive

  • Experience contributing to or coordinating water-related EIA and WFD assessments

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks or small project workstreams and deliver to tight timescales

  • Confidence managing project documentation, schedules and basic commercial tracking

  • Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience engaging with regulators and stakeholders, including statutory consultees

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience delivering or coordinating HRA assessments

  • Experience contributing to complex or high-profile projects

  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional body

  • Experience with GIS software

  • Line management or mentoring experience

  • Experience supporting projects within varied consenting regimes such as DCO, TCPA or TWA

  • A full UK driving licence
