Due to sustained growth, APEM’s Water Management Division is seeking a Senior Consultant – Water Assessments to join our Environmental Appraisal team. This is a varied and rewarding role that blends technical authoring, discipline coordination and project management.
You will work across water quality, hydrology, hydromorphology, flood risk, groundwater and aquatic ecology inputs, contributing to integrated assessments that shape high-impact environmental and infrastructure projects at both national and local scale.
This role offers a clear pathway towards Principal level, with growing exposure to multidisciplinary integration, client leadership and strategic environmental advisory work.
What you’ll be doing

Authoring and contributing to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapters

Producing Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments
-
Supporting Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)

Coordinating baseline data and technical inputs from multiple environmental disciplines
-
Managing project delivery, including scheduling, data interpretation and quality assurance

Leading small to medium-sized workstreams, including commercial tracking, risk management and client-facing responsibilities
As your confidence grows, you’ll take increasing ownership of project elements, strengthen your commercial awareness and build the leadership capability required for progression.
What we’re looking for
You’ll need to bring:

MSc or PhD in Environmental Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

Minimum three years’ experience in environmental consultancy
-
Strong understanding of environmental legislation, particularly the Water Framework Directive
-
Experience contributing to or coordinating water-related EIA and WFD assessments
-
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks or small project workstreams and deliver to tight timescales
-
Confidence managing project documentation, schedules and basic commercial tracking
-
Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills
-
Experience engaging with regulators and stakeholders, including statutory consultees

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
It’s a bonus if you have:

Experience delivering or coordinating HRA assessments

Experience contributing to complex or high-profile projects

Membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional body

Experience with GIS software

Line management or mentoring experience

Experience supporting projects within varied consenting regimes such as DCO, TCPA or TWA
-
A full UK driving licence
