About The Role

Are you experienced in coastal and offshore physical processes and their interaction with marine infrastructure? Do you enjoy leading technical workstreams while supporting and mentoring a growing team? Are you looking for an opportunity to shape how robust marine science informs major offshore developments?

APEM is seeking a Principal Consultant–Marine Physical Processes to join our multi-specialist Marine Science team. Our physical processes specialists support major offshore wind and coastal infrastructure projects, applying expertise in oceanography, geomorphology, seabed mobility and marine geology to deliver robust environmental assessments and practical solutions for clients.

In this role, you’ll lead physical processes workstreams across a range of projects, providing expert advice on the interaction between marine developments and the receiving environment. You’ll contribute to EIA and HRA assessments, support stakeholder and regulator engagement, and help develop solution-focused services for clients across offshore wind and wider marine infrastructure projects. Alongside technical delivery, you’ll mentor consultants within the team, managing workloads and resources, and ensure all outputs are delivered to the highest technical standards.

What you’ll need:

  • Educated to at least degree level (preferably MSc) in a relevant discipline (Marine Biology, Marine Sciences, etc.) 
  • Excellent written and oral communication, organisational and time management skills 
  • A professional manner with strong inter-personal skills and an ability to communicate at all levels 
  • Established track record on provision of marine physical processes advice, derived from a relevant career in consultancy, research or working for government 
  • Working knowledge of the technical assessments underpinning hydrodynamic, oceanographic, sedimentological and geophysical work (e.g. survey specification & interpretation, consequences of changes to physical processes etc.)
  • To be able to review reports and project documents to ensure that they meet the highest technical standards, and the clients aims and objectives.
  • Experience working with regulators and stakeholders. 
  • Resource management for workflows and teams.

What helps you stand out:

  • Experience in major infrastructure projects (renewables, ports and harbours, aggregates, cables).
  • Proven experience of attendance at examination/ IRG meetings. 
  • Experience in numerical modelling.  
  • Experience of working within the planning process, and ideally in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland.
