We’re looking for a Senior Consultant – Water Quality to join APEM’s growing Freshwater Quality team.
This is a key role within the team, with a strong focus on project delivery, technical analysis and client engagement. You’ll work across a diverse portfolio of water and sediment quality projects, supporting clients to understand environmental challenges and design effective management solutions.
While this role is primarily desk-based, there will be opportunities to get involved in fieldwork where appropriate. We are also keen to hear from candidates with experience beyond freshwater, particularly in transitional and coastal environments, reflecting the breadth of work we deliver.
You’ll play a central role in managing projects from start to finish; from designing monitoring programmes and analysing data, through to reporting, client engagement and identifying future opportunities. Alongside this, you’ll support the development of junior team members and contribute to the continued growth of the Water Quality Division.
What you’ll be doing

Leading and supporting the delivery of water and sediment quality projects

Managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery to time, budget and quality

Designing and costing monitoring programmes

Processing, analysing and interpreting environmental data

Producing high-quality technical reports and presenting findings clearly to clients

Contributing to tenders, including technical writing and cost development

Building and maintaining strong client and stakeholder relationships

Mentoring and supporting graduate and consultant-level team members

Identifying opportunities for follow-on work and supporting business growth
What we’re looking for
You’ll need to bring:

Experience working in a commercial environmental consultancy at Senior level
-
Strong knowledge of water and sediment quality assessment and management
-
Experience across areas such as water quality impact assessment, catchment management, reservoir management, algal blooms or related fields

Proven ability to deliver high-quality consultancy projects to time and budget

Strong data handling, analysis and interpretation skills

Experience designing monitoring programmes

Good understanding of the project lifecycle, including commercial aspects of delivery

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Understanding of key UK environmental legislation
It’s a bonus if you have:

Experience in water quality modelling (e.g. SIMCAT)

Experience in transitional or coastal environments

A relevant postgraduate qualification

Chartered status or working towards professional accreditation
