We’re looking for a Consultant – Hydroecology to join our award-winning Freshwater Science team. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a collaborative group of aquatic scientists and environmental specialists delivering high-quality hydroecological consultancy across a diverse range of projects and sectors.
Freshwater ecology has been established as an area of APEM expertise for many years. Our Freshwater Science discipline delivers cutting-edge collection, analysis and interpretation of hydroecological data, helping clients make evidence-based decisions that balance environmental protection with the sustainable use of water resources.
This is a genuinely varied role where you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to all stages of the consultancy process. From supporting project opportunities and helping design monitoring and mitigation plans, through to coordinating surveys, analysing data, producing high-quality scientific reports and communicating findings to clients and regulators, you’ll gain broad exposure across the full project lifecycle.
Typical projects are driven by the requirements of the Water Framework Directive and Habitats Regulations, with clients including environmental regulators, water and energy companies, and infrastructure developers across the UK.
You’ll work closely with specialists across freshwater ecology, hydrology, invasive non-native species, water quality, environmental management and data analytics, giving you the opportunity to broaden your technical expertise while contributing to integrated environmental solutions.
You’ll need to bring
- A BSc or MSc degree in a relevant environmental, ecological or scientific discipline.
- Relevant experience supporting the delivery of freshwater ecology or hydroecology projects.
- Experience contributing to projects delivered on time, within budget and to a high technical standard within environmental consultancy, the water industry or a regulatory environment.
- Strong technical report writing skills and the ability to communicate environmental information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Experience communicating with regulators, clients and/or other stakeholders.
- Experience contributing to the design and implementation of ecological monitoring programmes.
- Knowledge of policy, legislation and issues relating to freshwater ecosystems or water resources.
- An understanding of environmental impact assessment processes.
- Excellent numerical skills, attention to detail and a collaborative approach to problem solving.
It’s a bonus if you have
- Experience of freshwater ecology survey work, including macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and/or diatoms.
- Experience managing subcontractors.
- Experience preparing or approving Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS).
- GIS capability using ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Experience using R or Python for ecological data analysis.
- Experience of environmental data management.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as CIEEM or CIWEM, or working towards chartered status.
