About The Role

Are you an experienced ornithologist looking for a new role that will challenge you and offer variety on your day-to-day tasks? Do you have experience with managing or directing projects, particularly around offshore wind? Do you want to be part of a diverse and multi-specialist team, contributing to a centre of excellence for all things ornithology? Due to our continued growth, APEM Group are looking for a Principal ornithologist to join our ornithology team, delivering expert advice and technical assessments for ground-breaking projects across a variety of clients and projects for both private and public sectors. 

As Principal Consultant, you will plan and manage project workloads from an ornithological perspective, leading ornithological related workstreams including delivering ornithological assessment input into the EIA and HRA process for offshore wind developments. Working closely with the other Principals and Associate Director, you will contribute to expanding the business across the UK, Europe and worldwide, and to set and deliver the business strategies for the ornithology teams. You will be involved in aspects of tender preparation, both individually, with other internal teams and in partnership with external organisations. You will also successfully develop, maintain and manage internal and external stakeholder relationships, directing varied scale projects with multidisciplinary teams based in various locations.  You will hold prime position in contributing to a centre of excellence for Ornithological advisory services, setting high standards and ensuring timely delivery of technical quality throughout the projects you are engaged in. You will lead and mentor a team of consultants and senior consultants, acting as a mentor and guide, including providing constructive feedback and coaching to more junior members of the team.

You will have:
  • A degree (preferably MSc), in a relevant science discipline.
  • An established track record in the field of ornithology or seabird ecology, or impact assessment, derived from a relevant career in consultancy, research or working for NGOs or government.
  • Professional accreditation (CIEEM, IEMA etc.).
  • A detailed knowledge of the technical assessments underpinning ornithological work in support of large development projects and through the EIA and HRA processes (e.g. CRM, displacement analysis, apportioning, population modelling, monitoring design, etc.) related to onshore or offshore wind development.
  • Considerable experience working with and developing relationships with regulators and stakeholders.
  • Track record in project delivery – project management of programmes including large, high profile or complex projects.
  • Managerial and leadership experience, including resource and capacity planning.
  • To have excellent report writing ability, demonstrated by a track record of writing high quality technical reports for a range of clients in the private and public sector.
  • To be able to talk knowledgeably about a wide range of subjects within a relevant field, and to be viewed as an expert in your chosen field.
