Are you looking to take the next step in your environmental science career? Do you want to apply your academic studies, and practical experience to real-world projects that improve rivers, wetlands, and freshwater ecosystems? Are you keen to combine fieldwork with data-driven science and reporting?
We’re looking for a Consultant Fluvial Geomorphologist to join our growing Water Management team at APEM. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their consultancy career, with a relevant BSc or academic background, who is eager to develop their expertise in fluvial processes, river restoration, sediment management, and catchment-scale hydrology.
The role offers a mix of around 30% fieldwork and 70% desk-based science and reporting, giving you the chance to balance hands-on survey experience with technical data analysis and written outputs. You’ll be supported by a highly experienced team of consultants and field scientists, helping you to grow your skills across technical delivery, project management, and client engagement.
Your work will contribute to high-profile projects such as water resources investigations, drainage and sediment management, and river/wetland restoration design. Over time, you’ll have the opportunity to develop project leadership skills, gain exposure to multi-disciplinary programmes, and build your technical expertise in specialist areas like hydromorphological modelling and natural flood management.
You’ll need to bring:
- BSc or above in a relevant discipline (e.g. geomorphology, hydrology, catchment management, environmental science)
- Understanding of hydromorphological forms and processes
- Experience of undertaking fieldwork such as habitat surveys, fluvial audits, or restoration appraisals
- Strong numerical analysis skills, including use of GIS and other data analysis tools
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Organised, flexible, and able to manage deadlines
It’s a bonus if you have:
- Experience with hydraulic modelling (e.g. HEC RAS, Flood Modeller)
- Sediment transport or catchment/wetland modelling experience
- Skills in AutoCAD, R, or statistical analysis
- Exposure to consultancy, project management, or client delivery
At APEM, you’ll be part of a collaborative, supportive environment where technical excellence and career development are at the heart of what we do. We’ll give you the chance to grow your skills, work on varied projects, and make a tangible difference to water and freshwater management.
