About The Role

Are you an experienced ornithologist ready to take the next step in your consultancy career? Do you enjoy turning complex bird data into clear insights and solutions for clients? Looking for a role where you can lead on projects, mentor others, and shape how we deliver ornithology services?

We’re looking for a Senior Ornithology Consultant to join our growing Ornithology team. You’ll be at the heart of delivering high-quality field and desk-based projects across terrestrial, intertidal, and offshore environments—helping clients make evidence-based decisions on large infrastructure and renewable energy developments.

In this role, you’ll combine technical expertise with client-facing consultancy. You’ll liaise with developers, regulators, and stakeholders, provide trusted ornithological and planning advice, and contribute to baseline reporting, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), and Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA). Alongside technical delivery, you’ll also mentor junior colleagues, support proposals, and play an active role in bringing in new projects. This is an excellent opportunity to deepen your ornithological expertise while influencing some of the UK’s most exciting environmental and infrastructure projects.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • A strong background in ornithology, with knowledge of bird ecology, behaviour, and demography
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to engage clients, regulators, and colleagues
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, innovative mindset
  • Ability to produce high-quality reports under time and cost constraints
  • Experience supporting or leading client liaison and project delivery
  • A collaborative, team-focused approach, with the ability to mentor and support junior staff

What helps you stand out:

  • An established CV in ornithology, with specialist survey experience
  • Experience in project management and delivering consultancy services
  • Knowledge of the UK planning process, particularly EIA and HRA requirements
  • Commercial awareness gained from previous consultancy work
  • Proficiency with GIS/QGIS and/or statistical tools such as R

At APEM, you’ll join a people-first consultancy that values flexibility, collaboration, and technical excellence. We use cutting-edge ornithological science and innovative techniques to deliver meaningful insights for clients across the private and public sectors. This is your chance to grow as a trusted advisor, develop your consultancy skills, and play a central role in shaping ornithology delivery on nationally significant projects.

You will be offered the chance to work on a variety of projects, many of our employees have worked on projects that have been of personal interest to them. We match this with a commitment to continuous development and learning to support your career.
