Due to continued growth, APEM’s Water Quality Division is seeking a Principal Consultant - Freshwater Quality to play a key role in delivering our AMP8 major projects portfolio.
This is a fantastic opportunity to lead on large, multi-year programmes of work for water company clients, involving multiple stakeholders, cross-divisional inputs and external subcontractors. You’ll be at the centre of delivery; ensuring projects run smoothly, on time and to budget, while maintaining the high technical standards APEM is known for.
While this role sits within Freshwater Quality, we are open to candidates from across all disciplines of environmental consultancy including marine, freshwater or terrestrial backgrounds. What matters most is your ability to manage complex projects, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and build strong client relationships.
You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved in a diverse range of impactful work, including bathing water investigations, large-scale monitoring programmes, and data-led projects that feed into modelling and SOAF programmes.
This is a highly visible role where you’ll work closely with senior leaders, contribute to business growth and play a key part in shaping how we deliver major projects across AMP8.
What we’re looking for
You’ll need to bring:

Strong experience managing large and/or complex projects, ideally within environmental consultancy or a related sector

Proven ability to deliver multi-year programmes involving multiple stakeholders, teams and subcontractors

Excellent project management skills, including planning, financial management and risk management

Strong client-facing and stakeholder engagement skills

Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams across different technical areas

A collaborative and solutions-focused approach

Excellent communication and organisational skills
It’s a bonus if you have:

Experience working within the UK water sector or on water company frameworks

Technical experience in freshwater quality, marine or terrestrial environments

Experience contributing to tenders and winning work

Strong commercial and contractual awareness

Experience working on AMP programmes or similar large infrastructure frameworks

Knowledge of water quality investigations, monitoring or data-led environmental projects (e.g. bathing waters, modelling, SOAF)
