About The Role

Are you a senior data science professional who enjoys turning complex environmental data into meaningful insight for clients? APEM’s Water Data Science team is at the forefront of applying data, analytics and modelling to solve some of the most pressing environmental challenges from water scarcity and pollution to climate change and ecosystem resilience.

We’re looking for an Associate Technical Director to play a key role in leading the growth, technical direction and delivery of this specialist capability. You will become a trusted advisor to clients, helping to build strong relationships and consistently identifying and securing new opportunities. You’ll confidently represent APEM in client settings, understand complex challenges, and translate them into high-value, data-driven solutions.

A key part of the role is shaping and evolving our technical capability identifying opportunities for innovation, developing new approaches, and supporting the continued growth and development of the team through mentoring and knowledge sharing. Alongside this, you’ll lead high-quality project delivery ensuring outputs are technically robust, commercially sound and deliver real impact.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Strong experience in environmental data science, analytics or statistics, ideally within water, energy or environmental sectors
  • A track record of building client relationships and winning work, including leading proposals and tenders
  • Experience delivering high-quality technical projects, ensuring outputs meet both client expectations and commercial objectives
  • The ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical solutions for clients
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with confidence operating at senior level
  • Experience contributing to strategy, service development and business growth
  • A collaborative mindset, with a passion for mentoring and developing others

Desirable / bonus:

  • Experience working with regulators, water companies or infrastructure clients
  • A recognised profile or growing reputation within your technical field
  • Experience developing innovative modelling or analytical approaches
  • Line management experience or a desire to step into people leadership
