About The Role

Are you a marine ecology graduate looking to build your career in marine science? Do you have an interest in marine invertebrate taxonomy and environmental monitoring? Are you looking for a role where you can develop your technical skills through hands-on laboratory work, with opportunities to get involved in marine surveys?

We’re looking for a Marine Lab Ecologist to join our AQUAFACT team in Galway. This is a primarily laboratory-based role, working with benthic invertebrate samples collected from estuarine, coastal and offshore environments. You’ll process and sort samples, developing your taxonomic knowledge and supporting the preparation of environmental data, alongside opportunities to participate in marine and intertidal surveys.

As you develop your experience, you’ll become confident working across different sample types and identifying the major groups of marine benthic organisms. You’ll work to established procedures and quality standards, gaining practical experience in marine ecology while contributing to projects that help assess and understand impacts on the marine environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate marine ecologist/scientist at the beginning of their career with an interest in marine invertebrate taxonomy and marine ecology.

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Relevant third level degree (Level 8 or higher) in marine ecology/biology or related discipline.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Demonstrated interest in marine ecology, marine invertebrate taxonomy and/or environmental monitoring
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, with strong data management skills and attention to detail in recording and handling scientific information.

Desirable:

  • A Postgraduate degree in marine ecology/biology or related discipline
  • Basic understanding of identification of marine invertebrate identification and the major taxonomic groups likely to be encountered.
  • Experience of marine invertebrate sample processing and/or marine sampling techniques.
  • Previous boat handling experience
  • A valid Irish driving licence.

You will be offered the chance to work on a variety of projects, many of our employees have worked on projects that have been of personal interest to them.
