We’re looking for a Senior Marine & Commercial Fisheries Scientist to join our specialist Marine & Commercial Fisheries team.
This is a predominantly desk-based technical and consultancy role, giving you the opportunity to use your knowledge of fisheries, fish ecology and environmental data across a varied portfolio of projects. You’ll be analysing and interpreting biological, fisheries and environmental datasets, developing evidence bases and producing high-quality technical reports and assessments to support environmental decision-making.
You’ll work on nationally important coastal infrastructure and offshore wind projects, fisheries management and marine conservation, as well as supporting marine licensing, Environmental Impact Assessments and Habitats Regulations Assessments.
The role offers a great balance of technical delivery, data analysis, report writing, project management and client engagement, with the opportunity to develop your consultancy and commercial skills alongside your technical expertise.
Although the role is predominantly office/home based, you’ll still have opportunities to get out into the field, with approximately 8 weeks of vessel-based, estuarine and coastal survey work each year. You’ll also have the opportunity to engage directly with commercial fishing representatives and support fisheries consultation and stakeholder engagement.
You’ll take ownership of projects from proposal through to completion, managing programmes, budgets and quality, whilst building strong client relationships and supporting the development of more junior members of the team.
Working alongside experienced fisheries scientists and wider marine specialists, you’ll be part of a collaborative team where there is plenty of scope to share knowledge, develop new ideas and contribute to the continued growth of our Marine & Commercial Fisheries capability.
You can be based anywhere in the UK, with travel required for fieldwork, client meetings and other project activities.
You’ll need to bring

A degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, Marine Ecology, Environmental Science or a closely related discipline.

Typically 5+ years’ relevant professional experience within marine fisheries, marine ecology, environmental science and/or consultancy.

A strong understanding of marine fisheries ecology, fish monitoring methods and/or fisheries data analysis.

Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret biological, fisheries and environmental datasets.

Experience producing high-quality technical reports, assessments and scientific outputs.

Experience managing projects and coordinating technical work programmes.
-
Experience delivering marine ecology and/or commercial fisheries inputs to EIAs, HRAs and consenting processes.

Vessel-based survey experience.

Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to clients and stakeholders.

A collaborative approach and an interest in supporting and developing colleagues.

A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required.
It’s a bonus if you have

Experience managing or developing junior colleagues.

Knowledge of fisheries data sources including MMO, ICES, CEFAS or Marine Directorate Scotland.

Knowledge of commercial fisheries assessment methodologies.

Experience working with fishing industry organisations, regulators or developers.

Experience supporting offshore wind, marine infrastructure or marine licensing projects.

GIS experience, particularly ArcGIS or QGIS.

Chartered status or progress towards professional accreditation.

Experience of fish impingement and entrainment monitoring.
